REINVENTING THE FAUCET
The history of miscea GmbH dates back to 1999 when in Augsburg, two engineers shared a vision to develop an improved dispensing system for the medical market and food production industry. They envisioned a system which would combine the functionalities of a faucet and at least one other liquid to enhance efficiency and hygiene; an idea that would change the way people washed and sanitised their hands and see the beginning of miscea.
The very first patent for this idea was also filed in 1999 and development of a product that would fulfil this vision commenced soon after. As a result a prototype model was introduced as the alfa-innovations hand hygiene system. Although the concept had finally became a reality, the product itself suffered from a number of technical and quality issues.

In 2003, miscea was established as a company with Henk Talsma as the managing director. The name miscea was chosen because it best described the company’s goals and products at the time. The name ‘miscea’ was derived from the Latin word ‘miscere’ which means to blend or mix.
After some improvements to the alfa-innovations system, miscea began production and commercialisation of the idea. It was used initially in high impact facilities such as in medical and food service environments. Being the only product of its kind on the market, there was tremendous interest in the systems. There was even greater interest for these systems within dental practices and other medical facilities.

The alfa-innovations faucet enjoyed mixed success. Customers loved the concept but it was too complex to use and suffered from various quality setbacks. During a trade exhibition in Amsterdam in 2006, the idea to improve the design blossomed which initiated the design process on a completely new unit, while keeping in mind the customer feedback received over previous years.
A successful partnership with the award winning designer Mathis Heller of WELL Design was formed. He conceived the idea of the new innovative user interface. This soon became the miscea CLASSIC which went on to win numerous accolades including the iF Product Design Award, reddot Design Award as well as many others. During the ISH 2007 exhibition in Frankfrut, the miscea CLASSIC prototypes were presented to a broad audience and production of the system began later that same year.

The miscea CLASSIC system enjoyed instant success amongst customers with a concern for hygiene, primarily professionals within the medical and laboratory branches. The miscea CLASSIC system was easy to use, efficient and hygienic benefits are considered all important aspects by these professionals.
An important contribution to miscea overall success was made with the patented pouch refill system which, complies with the guidelines of the Robert Koch Institute in Germany. However not all aspects of the system were considered a success. Installation of the system components were considered particularly cumbersome.

With the release of two new product ranges, 2014 was a year of product design awards for miscea. The miscea LIGHT system was awarded the 2014 iF Product Design Award and the miscea design and technical team were invited to attend the glamorous award ceremony at the BMW Welt Event Forum in Munich.
In the same year, the miscea LIGHT and miscea KITCHEN ranges received nominations in the German Design Award. The miscea KITCHEN received a ‘Special Mention’ Award for it’s unique and innovative design.
The miscea LIGHT and miscea KITCHEN systems went on to win the Silver A’Design Award and Golden A’Design Award respectively in the Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design Category for 2013 – 2014.
